Physical Therapy
This afternoon I had my first physical therapy appointment for headache (pain) management. I think it went pretty well. The whole idea of everything that went on is/was completely new to me, so it may take a while for all of it to sink in and for me to understand exactly what's going on.
She showed me that I have two areas that are not mobile like they should be. One area is the back of my head at the very top of my neck (spine) and the other area is my low, no lower, back at the end of my spine. She explained to me how they are related and I have yet to reasearch and learn more about it.
After evaluating things and showing me the places where I could use some improvement, she treated me. The treatment was all manual and almost all on my head (which felt wonderful, but I don't think that's the point). She talked me through where she felt (literally) things needed to be adjusted, then adjusted them by massaging and/or applying pressure.
At the end of the treatment she performed the same evaluation as before and showed me how much more mobility I had achieved just from this one treatment. It was amazing! I was in total shock! We next talked about how today she had taken off a layer of the things I need done and that the next time I come in we may see totally new things that need to be worked on.
Now, of course, that was everything in a nutshell. Oh, how I wish Bryan could have been there to soak up all of the medical terms she used and to understand everything better than I did about all that is/was going on. I am excited to learn more and more about my body and how it works everytime I go see her. I'm even more excited, though, to watch my pain fall off the radar a little bit at a time after each treatment.
For those of you who are skeptical about this whole thing, I'll leave you with this: This was the first time (considering the past 2 years when we've been seeking treatment like mad) that I have come out of an appointment NOT feeling worse than when I went in. Praise the Lord!

Crocheting
I tried knitting a while back, but I never really got into it. I'm not sure if I had the wrong yarn or my knitting needles were too big, or what, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't make anything. I kept dropping one side or kept making it too tight and wasn't able to manipulate the yarn. Considering, though, I never had any real instruction, except for this cheat sheet thing I picked up at Hobby Lobby, so maybe my results aren't all that surprising.
On to my next eye/hand-coordinated endeavor: crocheting. I'm still a little at a loss for why I can crochet and not knit, since they logically seem so similar, but all I can come up with is that it's easier with only one instrument (crochet hook) instead of two (two knitting needles). Well, it was a lot easier for me anyway. I love to crochet and I'm not that bad at it!
It all started when a lady at work brought in a scarf that got a lot of attention. She told everyone that another co-worker had made it for her, so the next thing you know there are 5 of us bringing crochet hooks and yarn to work so we can learn to crochet a scarf at lunch. Yesterday was our first attempt and it seemed like everyone had some sort of success. It took me three tries to get the single crochet stitch down (it was a little confusing for everyone since I was doing it left-handed), but then I was golden! I couldn't seem to rest easy until I saw some fruits of my labor, so I completed the scarf last night.
Now Bryan has a brand-new, homemade, black and brown scarf to wear! I just wish it was colder out so that he could actually wear it. Maybe he'll get a chance before the season's over.
Next challenge: a crocheted baby blanket for a co-worker's baby shower

Reading - My New Love
In one of my previous posts I mentioned some things I might do to stay enterained while Bryan is busy with his hospital rotations, one of which was reading Harry Potter. At the time I didn't realize that I was about to embark upon the wonderful adventure that is reading.
Sure, I've read stuff, and might even consider myself well-read, but most of the things I've read were required for school and I read them as fast as I could, if at all, then blundered through the assignment that accompanied it. So, to pick up a book and read it for pleasure was a whole new experience.
I have a friend who's kept up with reading Harry Potter, so I borrowed the first book from her. I read it in a week. Did you read that right? A WEEK! From then on I was hooked and started buying the books, in hardback, to start my own collection. Since then, which I think was about 3 months ago, I have read through the fourth Harry Potter adventure and have become more eager to finish and read the next book each time.
Now, I know what you're thinking..."Harry Potter? Come on!", but until you've picked up a book for the first time that made you WANT to read the whole thing in one setting without putting it down, you'll never understand. Harry Potter was my breakthrough and I'm grateful.
Since finishing the fourth book, and buying tickets in advance to see the just-released movie, I have decided to take a break and read The Chronicles of Narnia before The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe comes out in the theaters. It's really fun to read the book and know the whole story before watching it on film. I have plans to complete the Harry Potter series after reading through Narnia and who knows after that, but I know that I'll find something.
I guess I owe all of this to Bryan for not paying attention to me the past few months. Go figure.

Wicked Weekend
This weekend was girl weekend and it was wonderful! There were 6 of us who went to see Wicked at Music Hall in Fair Park. The 3 of us (me, Steph, and Jamie) drove down and met up with the other 3 (Mom and company) at my parents house.
The show was amazing! I would do anything to be able to sing like that! We sat in the very last row but it didn't matter a bit. We took turns with the binoculars and were all in sheer bliss for a complete 2 hours and 45 minutes! Stephanie and Jamie haven't put the cd down since Stephanie bought it and they both basically talk in lines from the songs now. It's great! We're already planning when we can see it again!
One of the best parts was getting to be girly and get all dressed up! All in all, it was a great weekend trip that I know we'll all remember forever (how corny can I get?)!

Surgery - Rotation #3
Bryan has successfully completed two of his 3rd year rotations and has just moved on to the third: surgery.
Already, after just one day, our lives have completely changed. We no longer have a relationship and are able to talk or hang-out; we just smile and nod at each other as he comes in the door and heads upstairs to study. I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. I'm not, really. Actually, I plan on taking this opportunity of solitude to find a hobby... or something.
I've actually got a start on that:
1.) After all the chaos about the new Harry Potter book, I decided to jump on the band-wagon. I read the first book in about a week. I was amazed! I've never been able to just pick up a book and read it, but this one I did. It was great, almost like a book readers break-through! So, after reading the first book I obviously set out to read the second one. I'm about finished with that one, too. I bet you can't guess what I'm going to do after I finish it? I knew you'd figure it out. You're so smart.
2.) Knitting has some how brought itself to my attention. I have had several tries at it and haven't seemed to produce anything yet, but I'm not giving up. I was thinking maybe a scarf. That's something that could actually be practical. And I do have all the stuff, so we'll see if I ever make anything. My yarn is a real pretty dark red. Does that count for anything?
3.) I'm running these days, too. My good friend Stephanie and I are getting in shape to run The Race for the Cure in a couple of months.
4.) This thing. I can't decide if I'm committed to keep this blog updated or not. I don't consider myself as a writer and after I write stuff I always think it sounds stupid. So, we'll see how long this lasts. Really I just want to use it to keep in better touch with everyone, but I haven't even told anyone about it. Kinda defeats the purpose, huh? I guess I'll just keep trying and see if it bears any fruit. I should have plenty of time to write these next two months. It won't be hard to tell if this will keep up or not.
Wish Bryan luck for the next few weeks. He'll need it; we'll both need it.

Playing Catch-up
Looking back, we've had a pretty busy summer. Actually, it all started back in March when we moved (yes, again) and bought our first car. Somehow things haven't seemed to slow down at all.

Hurricane Harbor
Q: What do you get when you unleash 4 semi-adults in a huge waterpark without supervision?
A: Chaos and side-splitting laughter!
Our latest adventure took us back to Texas where we were able to share our favorite waterpark with two of our friends that had never been, Micah and Stephanie. We all had a great time! Despite the bees thinking Bryan's swimsuit had a real flower on it, Micah not being able to see anything without his glasses, my fear of the Der Stuka, and those gosh-darn awful misters they had going, we had a great time (wink, wink). Thanks for coming with us, guys!

USMLE
A little background for those we haven't talked to in a while...
In order for Bryan to advance to his 3rd year of med school (which started at the beginning of July) he had to take Step 2 (of 4, mind you) in the form of a huge, gigantic, nasty, intimidating, all-day-long test. If any student doesn't pass this test he/she will not be able to advance in their medical training. I'll spare you the stress, the headaches, the long nights, and the tears that went into this test and just inform you all that BRYAN BLEW THE TEST OUT OF THE WATER! His scores were phenomenal and he couldn't have hoped for better markings! He's making every one so proud. Way to go, baby!
Our 2nd Wedding Anniversary - July 26th
Two years? Has it been that long already? Man, how time flies! These last 2 years could not have been greater, I guess that's why it's gone by so fast. Here's how we celebrated this year (we kinda have a tendency to overdue things): 2 dozen of the most beautiful roses ever from the one-and-only man in my life, the best steak dinner ever at Boulevard Steakhouse, and a wonderful trip home to see the parents and spend a weekend at Hurricane Harbor with two of our dear friends (also celebrating their anniversary - 1 year for Micah and Stephanie!).
Puerto Vallarta, baby!
That's right! Bryan and I got some time away in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed for a week and did a whole lot of nothing. It was great! We ate tons of Mexican food, took walks on the beach before the rest of Mexico woke up, took naps every day (on the beach and in the hotel), ate out in the evenings, took a trimaran to one of the coastal islands called Las Caletos, saw a tribal wedding ceremony, and had candlelight dinner by the beach. Are you jealous yet? What a great way to celebrate the end of Bryan's second year of med school!
A New Car
AKA, the scariest thing we've ever done! As exciting as it is to have a new car, I had a hard time letting go and just accepting the fact that a car payment is NOT the end of the world. Can you believe that? Having a car payment will NOT, in fact, kill a person. Huh, whodathought? So, now that I'm over all that, I can enjoy our brand new, shiney, black, Escape!
